The Maremma Sheepdog is a rustic dog, with high resistance to diseases, cold and weathering and doesn't requires special care, like many other dogs. Despite its size, it lives quite long, if well taken care after he can live beyond the age of 12, thanks to its natural resistance.

The Maremma Sheepdog does not fear cold temperatures and rain and prefers to stay outdoors. During the summer he needs a shady spot, possibly in contact with the soil, where he can rest during the hottest hours. However we must not forget to provide a shelter protected from bad weather, such as a Kennel or a simple shed. The Kennel will use very little, in particular will be used in the middle of winter. If the rain is light the dog probably won't even repair himselves.

The Maremma Sheepdog breed evolved living and working outdoors and therefore doing regular physical activity it is important to allow him proper development as a puppy, but it is also importante for the muscle tone and dynamism when he becomes adult. You don't need to do a lot of effort, but it is prefereble that he can have daily exercise outdoors such as walks on a leash or freely.

During rainy days his coat becomes dirty of dust and mud, but as soon as the coat dries the dirt falls autonomously and the coat will again be clean and dry. It is not necessary to wash the coat with soap if there are no special reasons. The coat of the Maremma Sheepdog must be white without spots, in winter the coat is thicker and has rich undercoat to protect the dog from winter temperatures, while in the summer he loses the undercoat. The coat should never be cut even during the summer, the summer coat has a protective function in the heat.
The coat doesn't need to be brushed regularly, but during moulting period (twice a year) when he loses the woolly undercoat, it is prefereble to brush the coat to help the fall of dead hair and the regrowth of the new one. Brushing the coat also avoid clumps of fur, especially behind the ears, when he scratch himselves.

It is important to have a vet that you trust for any need and advice regarding your dog's health, for the rest, we as the breeder will give you support and advice whenever needed.
We recommended periodically to clean the eyes and ears with a cotton ball soaked in Chamomile tea or with lukewarm water. From April to October the Maremma Sheepdog must be protected against external parasites, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, etc. Even the internal parasites, worms and bacteria must be combated, particularly during the puppy stage. The vet will recomend the products to use.

The vet will also give you information about vaccines against major infectious diseases and vaccination protocols to follow. Our puppies at the age of two months will be delivered to new owners with the first vaccination done with a pentavalent vaccine. If necessary we will also arrange for the rabies vaccine and the EU Pet passport or any other travel documents that the travel destination may require.

Finally, we suggest to start with small care already as a puppy in order to get your puppy used to being touched and to appreciate your attention. It will also create a more open relationship and mutual trust between you and your puppy. In addition it will be easier when you must take him to the vet.
It is also good to gradually get him used to travel by car, initially for very short trips when you go for a walk, in order for him to associate the car with something pleasent, and not only when he goes to the vet! Up to five six months old he could easily get car sick and will tend to throw up or drooling, but growing these discomforts will disappear.
